Bio

Marcel/a (b.1990) is a London based Romanian artist, working in painting and digital art.
Marcel/a creates art as a therapeutic act, using traditional and digital media to explore personal narratives of their gender identity and how technology and physical limitations impact their relationship with their body.
Marcel/a’s figurative oil paintings are unsettling, illustrating deformed reinterpretations of their digital avatars that evoke nostalgia and the surreal. Their art, characterised by vivid colours and distorted forms, blends joy, discomfort, and the grotesque, inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of identity and existence.
Marcel/a completed their MA at the Royal College of Art, London, in 2020. Their work has since been exhibited at Expo 2020 at the UK Pavilion in Dubai, Jerusalem Design Week and New order of Fashion at Heuvel Galerie 184, Eindhoven.

Statement

Integrating digital and traditional media, Marcel/a delves into themes of trans-human identity and the imperfections of the human condition. Initially they created poetic digital 3D animations to explore their queer identity, which relieved but later exacerbated their gender dysphoria, making them question their choice of a masculine body. Marcel/a began distorting their digital avatars through painting, a medium that allowed for imperfections where they create dreamlike figures that reflect the tension between their aspiration and reality.
The flowing brushwork in their paintings creates a sense of movement and depth capturing the essence of transformation, producing figures that appear both solid and fluid. Marcel/a creates art as a therapeutic act of storytelling, aiming for catharsis and emotional expression, their work conveying messages of self-care and self-love. Central themes include gender identity, technological progress and exploring illusions of self. Their art is part of the artist persona Marcel/a, reflecting their non-binary identity and addressing more personal and intimate narratives.
Initially working with digital media, Marcel/a created various representations of themselves as a transhuman queer avatar. The digital space provided a safe space to explore their ideal body and gender identity, free from societal expectations and physical constraints. In their earlier work "A Journey of Digital Introspection and Relief," Marcel/a discovered feelings of gender euphoria and hope. However, the perfection conveyed by digital media eventually reinforced unrealistic expectations of their own body, leading to questions of what masculinity means to them, searching for a way to destroy this image. Oil painting allowed for imperfection and provided a human touch, distorting the perfect bodies into phantasmagoric representations of monstrous appearances, pushing the boundaries of self-discovery.
Their latest anti-portraiture series, allows for the deconstruction and reimagining of identity, free from the constraints of realistic representation. By using both digital and traditional media, they can juxtapose the fluidity and malleability of digital identities with the tangible, imperfect nature of traditional art forms. This duality helps Marcel/a highlight the complexities and nuances of queer identity, offering a rich and layered exploration of self.
